Guided by Francis, Clare and her sisters bury themselves deeply…in the mystery of Christ, poor and crucified. In this manner…they give their hearts entirely to Him who on the Cross
offered His heart to God the Father.
-St. Bonaventure
The vocation of a Poor Clare is to belong totally to Jesus Christ. Love is at the heart of our vocation, just as it is at the heart of every Christian’s vocation. When we see the Holy Eucharist, we are looking at the greatest gift of love man has ever known! It is here that Jesus shares with us His Own Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity and “remains mysteriously in our midst as the one who loved us and gave Himself up for us.” (CCC 1380)
This symbol of the heart, the Cross and the Holy Eucharist is a summary of our Poor Clare life. We gaze upon Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. This leads us to consider the incredible gift of love He has shared with us, both in the Holy Eucharist and on the Cross. As we recognize the gift we have received we are drawn to contemplate His invitation to give ourselves totally to Him in return. Thus our lives become an imitation of the sacrificial love of our Bridegroom, as we offer ourselves to the Father and cooperate with Him in the work of redemption.
As we continue this time of Eucharistic Revival, and approach both the celebration of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and the month of the Sacred Heart, this is a prime time to reflect these incredible mysteries of our faith. May the hidden Poor Clare life point out the way to Jesus, so that your eyes and the eyes of the whole world, may rest on Him who is Love!
