Thanksgiving Day is the opportunity we have as a nation to thank God for all the gifts He has given us as individuals and as a nation. During this time of Eucharistic Reivival in the U.S. it's also the perfect day to recognize the greatest of all gifts--Jesus' Real Presence in the most holy Eucharist. In fact, the word eucharist is Greek for thanksgiving! Our Savior, Jesus Christ, is present in the tabernacles of our Catholic churches 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Are we grateful?
One way we can show our gratitude to God this Thanksgiving Day would be to attend Mass. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the opportunity par excellence to offer our worship and praise to God in union with Jesus' own thanksgiving to the Father. If you have family or friends joining you for a Thanksgiving Day gathering, invite them to Mass as well. Who knows, maybe you will start a new tradition?!
If you can't get to Mass, maybe you could make a Holy Hour together at an Adoration chapel, or even a "Holy Half-Hour" if that's all you can manage. Spending some time in prayer could add a new dimension to your family celebration. Here at Maria Regina Mater Monastery we have the custom of spending a Holy Hour together on Thanksgiving afternoon followed by a period of recreation which always include fun and laughter. We can attest, offering gratitude to God truly unlocks joy!
May this Thanksgivng Day be a Eucharistic one with our gratitude flowing from the true source and summit, Jesus Himself, who is present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the most holy Eucharist.
Happy Thanksgiving!
